EDITOR'S NOTE

Transitioning to a "monthly" format, if I feel like writing an article within the month... let's not get ahead of ourselves.

Hresvelgr / Jet Ion GP (PS2)

I've been collecting PS2 games, a lot of the consoles output is ambitious or brazenly bizarre. Hresvelgr or Jet Ion GP sits in the former category, it's a racing game meets flight simulator with five courses with several different tracks to follow, working similarly to Ridge Racer in that manner. The novelty in Hresvelgr is the energy strip, there is no road to speak of but a path. The closer you race to the strip, the faster your ship moves, however the further you move away from the strip the slower your racer moves and moving even further from the path pulls up a warning. You're basically trying your best to cut corners within reason, there is no break mechanic beyond not accelerating. Visually, the game has some real aesthetic value to it. While most stages have futuristic vistas, some have a natural theming. The notable key points I can think of is racing up a waterfall, seeing hot air balloons in motion over a blue sky with an enviable soundtrack by Terranigma composer Miyoko Takaoka playing really gives a sense of awe. There's also a great deal of lore, this text is shared across the game and the game manual. Now the downside are the fps, at the beginning of races the game absolutely crawls while the system renders 8 racers, energy beams and exhaust effects simultaneously at full detail. Once you do get ahead of the pack, the game runs more consistently. For what I probably bought for $2 AUD its been a novel and fun time, these devs at Gust continued making Atlier titles... it's a real odd detail in their output. I recommend anyone listen to the soundtrack and there's some other more detailed write-ups here. classic-games.net Barrel Wisdom Lunatic Obscurity
